HERALD 'SQUASHES' THE KARATE KID

Guys check out this one... its a funny one. This scan dates to November last year... A reader sent it over to us sometime back, but seems like we hadn't used it yet.
You know a computer spell check can be pretty merciless at times, especially when it comes to names. Remember the time when Director of Information Menino Peres was once misspelled as 'Mention Peers' in The Asian Age. And Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik -- the only constituency this guy appears to represent is perhaps a 'press note' -- was so whose name was so hilariously rejigged by the spell check as 'Tantrum Nails'. Barring the spelling, the software wasn't much off the mark in this particular case.
Anyway, poor Suyash has had to bear the brunt of some sub on the Herald's sports desk... Imagine the boys plight when his folks buy the newspaper in glee, only to find that his name's been misspelled 'Squash'.

Ashwin was not first choice

There is a new twist to the Herald saga. When Rahul Fernandes decided to get rid of Robin Abreau, (for whatever reason. Not necessarily the reasons put out in PP) he decided to employ only a Goan Editor. He had had enough of “Bombay” Editors, News Editors and wife.
His first choice was not Ashwin Tombat as is widely believed.
Rahul began the process sometime in October.
Rahul’s first choice was Cyril D’Cunha. He had three interviews with Cyril, a seasoned and well known journalist in Goa.
They met at various locations including Rahul’s house where Cyril is said to have been introduced to the Filipino’s that run HNC.
Cyril who, had earlier faced the music in Navhind Times, put down some conditions which Rahul was not ready to commit to in black or white (typically Rahul).
Cyril, further did not find the working conditions conducive and attractive. After his third and final meeting, Cyril began to play a hide and seek game with Rahul and did not get back to him.
It was at this time that Rahul had little or not choice to approach Ashwin Tombat, who took up the post willingly as he was jobless for quite a while.
This proves that Ashwin Tombat was not Rahul’s first choice.

(You can run this as a separate entry)

Kindly read the anchor heading on the technology page of herald dated 23 january, 2008. It is just hilarious. Blame it on Sergio or joel, but this header takes the cake.

The Director of information & publicity is a post reserved for an official of that department only.
Posts like the Director of Accounts, Supdt. of Police, Director of fire service, Director of info. & pub. are reserved for that particular department.

The recent appointment of Nikhil Desai is illegal. He is an officer of the Goa Civil Service (G.S.C.) and this post is not of his cadre.

Journos should not deal with this illegally appointed person. There is a law passed by democratically elected legislators which has to be followed. Hence, even a transfer order that is contradictory to the law is illegal.

(For further one may read about the Nuremberg trials wherein NAZI officals who had followed illegal orders were punished)

There were many non goan reporters and deskies approached by Herald management. So it is not true to say that pure bred Goans were approached first.

Regarding Non Goan Editors i think if one refreshes ones memory many of them had better exposure to journalism than the local breed. Eventhough some of these non goans created many storms like Arun Sinha but was ably assisted by his collegues (Goans) who helped him through the crisis.

I am curious to know more of what happened to the Arun Sinha Molestation case?

Good thing that Nikhil Desai has been appointed. The fellows in the Director of information & publicity are all useless. They issue pases to their friends and realtives and most of them are failed jounrnalists.

Good and thrilled to know that Menino Peres is being removed. It is high time that the CM revamp the whole Department.

And the person who has written this posting in suppport of the Director of information & publicity should know a little more about Indian democracy as he is not in Salazar's Goa(Colonial hangover)

The above anon appears to have skipped one very important sentence, namely

"Posts like the Director of Accounts, Supdt. of Police, Director of fire service, Director of info. & pub. are reserved for that particular department."

Democracy, eh? The rules are framed by elected representatives. They cannot be flouted (legally speaking). Period.

BTW, Nikhil has neither completed his 2 year pobation period nor has he answered the departmental exam. Both these are mandatory for a promotion. But then, as the saying goes..."Some people are more equal than others".

I think 'Mention Peers' (to be read: 'Menino and his peers') got a 'well-deserved' transfer. Earlier suspended by Parrikar and now given a mere kick to another department, the man ought to consider himself lucky. For, if one digs deeper, the man for sure will have a lot of skeletons rolling out of the cupboard.

What's more, his peer / partner-in-crime or, better still, 'Living Skeleton' (true to his figure and name initials!) continuing in the position of Asst Director / Info Officer is like leaving behind Peres' ghost to haunt the department.

In the earlier days, Living Skeleton merely resorted to a monotonous up-and-down drill to appear busy with his work (which he is inefficient to handle anyway). However, not satisfied with his cushy no-work-fat-pay status, in the last year or two (think he picked up courage after Congress came back to power) this strange being has been getting into 'strategic business alliances' with Palm Greasers (PG, with a silent 'i' in between). Well, if the Digu is really serious about cleaning DI, he ought to go the whole hog!

Menino Peres Anon: Please read the Herald dated Saturday 2nd February(Yesterday).

On pg. 4 In the article titled "Peres is Director of Official Language", there is a very important sentence
Peres will draw his salary against the post of Joint Director of Information of (and) publicity, the order said
Now u know the transfer is unlawful!
Digu should go as per rules.

Last Anon: What Parrikar? He allegedly caught Mr. Sahu IAS, taking a bribe but was unwilling to submit his evidence to the Vigilance Department. so stop making Parrikar a role model. Was there a quid-pro-quo?
