THE NAVHIND CRIMES -- THE DEVASHRI TRAGEDY -- LETTER TO PALLAVI DEMPO

Dear Pallavi Dempo,
As one of the directors of M/s Navhind Publications Pvt Ltd we thought we should tell you that the five labourers died after a compound wall of Devashri constructions (you ought to know by now that the firm is run by your husband Shri Srinivas Dempo who also runs the Navhind Group) Porvorim, fell on them as they slept.
And they died ma’am. Its not as if five of your eye lashes got weighed down under an unusually heavy streak of mascara and fell off. Five wage earners died.
Now the logic may be wasted on you. The death in a daily wage labourers’ home varies from a death of a patriarch in a conglomerate. There is no celebration of death. There is no will. The only heirlooms passed in most likelihood will be a mud-streaked vest, a pair of street-side underwear, a pouch of gutka, a few children and a few thousand rupees, if they are lucky. With the husband gone, the wife and kids are rarely staked out in whatever small landing holding they may have back home by her in-laws.
You did wrong by editing the name of Devashri out of the reports published in The Navhind Times. You did wrong by slipping these four deaths under a silly Page 1 lead story about computerization of ration cards (with that weird crocodile logo). A story which other newspapers had reported months ago.
People have died ma’am on your hands (your conglomerate) ma’am. While Devashri constructions gave them a hasty grave and The Navhind Times carved them a very poor tombstone.
Did you notice ma’am, that your newspaper did not even mention that it was the Devashri wall that did the labourers in. Your paper did not name the company? It surely wasn’t because they did not know which firm it was that did the poor sods in? It wasn’t carried precisely because they knew.
Jog your memory to a few weeks ago ma’am.
Remember that lead story your newspaper had carried about nudity in a newspaper (like Devashri you did not name the newspaper, but unlike Devashri, you did leave several clues to let your readers know that its Times of India, you were talking about) and you mentioned about how carrying such pictures was not moral? How moral is your hiding facts in this case? Your newspaper has suppressed critical information about the company because of whose carelessness five people have died.
As a media critiquing blog, the occasions when we get ourselves to thanks The Times of India are rare. This is one time when we will. Its good to have someone who can match up to the clout your newspaper and others Goan newspapers have been using as a condom to cap the news that isn’t of your interest.
We are glad now that there exists an organization as powerful as the one you own that names you when you do wrong. We also hope that you will return the compliment later. It felt nice to see that in this case, Herald and the Gomantak Times had enough pluck to state what happened. We need to navel-gaze ma’am. The media in Goa really needs to navel-gaze. There is too much dirty linen in the Goan media (not surprising since a lot of newspapers are money laundering units) that needs to be washed in public.
Readers ma’am, really do not want to know if your daughter received a consolation prize in some competition, but if someone has died, they’d surely want to know how.

Dears
I told a pussycat in the press,"In the papers I read, only the GT and the Herald mentioned that in the Porvorim tragedy where 5 labourers were buried alive the builders are
Devashree Developers. The NT mentions nix. And nobody mentioned
that Devashree is a Dempo concern. Very strange. Or perhaps not"

The mazor looked at me as if I was stupid, and with a bored yawn drawled,"So what's new. Meiow"

Guys, the DEMPO's are shameless, soulless people whose only, single minded, objective is of amassing wealth.
Other people, environment, etc. are meaningless entities for the DEMPO's.

Well said. If I may, there's another comment to be made here: this was not the first and will definitely not be the last time NT covers up a major story. But then what would you expect from a pathetic excuse for a newspaper?

The poor 5 men army died due to wall collapse on the plot on whose licence was of Savio D'Souza also known as Savio Chenitala who carried the money bags of High command man Ramesh Chemicala.
Why there is no arrest of the person who allowed such illegality on his plot. Is it because he is connected to the present politicians in power.

Why is that the voice of Goa since 1900 is silent after writing his name on the story of wall collapse. Has he met certain journos and taken care of them as he has taken care of the High Command men for Goan politicians presently in power.

Hi PP, this is unrelated to Dempo's Coverage in TNT but am sure You will do justice to it considering You Guys have been doing an amazing job and one wishes if there was a platform other than the Net where You without compromising on your anonymity could uncover the farce in Goan Media. But I am a bit baffled as to how TOI Goa is missing your hawkeye.

Check this...The Report on Pathologists on 10th June that Preetu Nair filed is a copy of her own report filed earlier on Gomantak Times is a copy of the Report filed in Goan Observer by Jonqil Sudhir is a copy of the Report filed by Rupesh Samant for TNT is a copy of the Report filed on some television channel way back in 2003. Speak of plagiarism that transcends time. The fact that there is nothing new in addition to what has already been seen doesn't surprise me. Trust Me, Preetu will next right on prostitutes at Baina (her proximity to the NGO Arz is legendary) and of course, child rights and all that blah, blah.

But the story doesn't stop here. Arun Sinha has not forgotten his old enmity / animosity to the Old Lady of Boribunder. What they can do we will take it further. So if ToI has a Education Page so has TNT (written by pretty li'l things that have joined TNT) and if they have a report so have we. The Pathology Report written by ToI had a follow up on front page of TNT (even the position was same).

Have the smart ass journos of Goa seen for themselves how they lickspittle from other sources.

Sincerely

Goan Jounrnalism has reached its nadir with Penpricks. The event you are discussing involved the death of five people ironically first reported by the Times of India and the byline was of Preetu Nair the bete noire of Penpricks. But in this muck you forgot that of the dead was a lady who was pregnant and her husband.(of course the five of them were outsiders and Ghattis)

This is what happens when journalists spend most of their time gossiping in some cafe about other journalists. At the end of the day these fellows run out of story ideas and keep on running around the bush.
