देखना है ज़ोर कितना बाजु-ऐ-कातिल में है... CRIMINAL ACTION AGAINST PENPRICKS? EXCHANGES ON GOA JOURNO

THE GOA EDITORS GUIL'T'
A bunch of farts, locally known as the Goa Editor's Guild, a body of editors representing Goan newspapers with a combined daily circulation of about a lakh and more, sat down for dinner, drinks at the Panjim Marriot and also to discuss ways to shut down http://penpricks.blogspot.com/.
Looks like Nazi-Gate has really, really hurt these fellas.
Penpricks is incidentally read by say about only 500 readers everyday (this, on days when there's no piano-carrying Johann Bach, or a cash-for-editorials scam or a post about editors offering massage services or one of our penpricks investigative story on blog).
One of the means put forth (and later discussed) by The Navhind Times Editor Arun Sinha was to file a complaint with the DGP Goa Police against penpricks so that 'the tirade against the journalist community is halted' [sic])
We think they should do it. We really think they should.
Look, the reasonings simple.
In 2005, the same Arun Sinha was booked for allegedly molesting his minor maid who he had 'brought' over from his native village in Bihar. After a complaint was lodged, Arun Sinha went underground for a while and the maid 'went' back to Bihar.
Then suddenly these anonymous letters found their way to the mailboxes of several journos. The sleazy anonymous mails claimed how activists -- who had to fight the system and the might of the Dempo's to file the molestation complaint, were imoptent. The series of mails described the women journalists who reported the incident as 'sexually frustrated' and had a lot of lurid details slipped in.
Three years down the line, the criminal case continues. By the looks of it, the case will continue for some time. And Arun Sinha continues to be the editor of The Navhind Times.
Dont see much of a harm there.
But Sinha sahab, first of all, we are not going to go run away from law. And Arun, we wont go into hiding like you did while on the dodge, once the molestation FIR was filed against you. FYI we are also not going to indulge in the sleazy mail routine too. Rest assured.
Go ahead file your complaint. If the Goa Police needs us to, then the pricks will come out of the closet (corny as that may sound). We'll identify ourselves.
Go ahead Arun...
Just do it man...

P.S. And dear editors, we need a small clarification. I know this is a trifle irritating, but thats a part of our brief. Who footed the liqour bill for this Goa Editor's Guild meeting at the Marriot? Did the Department of Information and Publicity pay up? Did the exchequer pay for your booze bills? Since the DI Director Nikhil Desai was present, we are inclined to believe that. It would be great if you guys could clarify this.

(Excerpts from the notoriously yellow weekly Goan Observer posted on the goa journo mailing list)
AGITATION, IRRITATION
AND a few stray observations on the agitation and irritation and fury and rage of The Navhind Times editor, Arun Sinha, with the anonymous journalists who run the blog called Penpricks. Indeed, the principal item on the agenda for the meeting of the Editors' Guild convened by Arun Sinha last Friday was the Penpricks blog. Not just Arun Sinha, but editors of all newspapers in Goa are sore about being taken for a ride by Penpricks.
The blog, which is run by a group of disgruntled journalists, most of whom being former employees of Herald, issued a fabricated press note claiming that a notorious Nazi war criminal had taken sanctuary in Goa, who had then been arrested just across the Goa border in Karnataka.
The blog claimed that the Nazi had exposed his cover when he had sought to sell an expensive organ to some private party. The scam was planned meticulously with a neo-Nazi type symbol morphed into the letterhead, claimed to be issued by some German organization.
None of the local papers, or for that matter many of the national papers, bothered to check out the story with either the German embassy or the Karnataka and Goa Police, and carried it, some of them very prominently.
The editors were left red-faced when the blog Penpricks revealed that the whole story was a scam which it had fabricated to expose the incompetence of editors and senior editorial staff. The Nazi scam came on top of a succession of exposes; many of which were close to the truth over the working of the media in Goa.
In the past, the Penpricks blog had conducted a sting operation exposing how the former editor of the Herald, Robin Abreu, had expressed his willingness to sell not just editorial space but the Holy of Holies, the editorial itself to an advertiser. It also had partly established that the former editor of Herald, Robin Abreu, was in the habit of plagarizing from editorials from other newspapers.
RAJAN DEAD
Penpricks has been quite unfairly fair or fairly unfair in targetting all editors and publications though, relatively speaking.
The Navhind Times and Herald have been its principal targets. The Goan Observer has, of course, been one of the favourite whipping boys of Penpricks. To the extent of not only accusing me of being a yellow journalist but even declaring me dead. IN fact, some who saw only the heading declaring me dead and did not read further, really thought I was dead or at least seriously ill. I received several calls from close friends and several friends kept calling each other to find out if I was seriously ill and had been admitted to hospital.
Arun Sinha raved and ranted and was insistent that the Editors' Guild should file a criminal complaint against the Penpricks blog to the Director General of Police. I was present there entirely by accident, or maybe because Arun Sinha thought that as a victim of Penpricks I would endorse his campaign of vendetta against them.
I have nothing against the comments that the Penpricks blog makes, including the comments they keep making about me. I think they are revealing, sometimes a little irritating and very often hilarious. I must admit that they have tended to be very personal and malicious at times.
But unlike Arun Sinha, I have no objection whatsoever to media blogs that are critical of people in the media. But I do believe that those who wish to criticize others should have the courage to identify themselves. I believe that the cloak of anonymity with which they surround themselves is despicable. Those who run the Penpricks are behaving like whores -- a community who it has been famously said exercise power without responsibility. I fault the Penpricks for their cowardice and not for their comments, which in any case I treat with contempt.

(Comments on Goa journo)
>OF COLD FEET AND FROST BYTES: THE STORY OF THE GT INTERVIEW THAT WASN'T
>PUBLISHED
With the Editor's guild going after penpricks, it is just a matter of time before penpricks will be nailed.
Penprick's IP address can be easily revelead by the ISP. If authorities subponea the ISP, they are bound to reveal penprick's ISP.
The only way out for penpricks is to use a proxy to do whatever he does, and that too he should use a proxy which is hosted and belongs to a company which is in a country where the privacy laws are much stronger than in India.

Samirbab,
Are you talking about Editors' Guidl at national level? Is there any registered body clled Goa editors' Guild? will anybody let us know?-

Dears,
Anonymity of the Newsdesk, Bureau or Wire Services is something journos use as a cover up their tracks from non-Journos. Penpricks is something that is getting back at the Journos and Editors with their own anonymity..... and they like it not!
The Nazi joke of Johann Bach revealed to what extent newspaper Editors [not just in Goa] are willing to do "Additions" to their "Editions" by way of "Sources" in the police, embassy or on the ground ...and how little they know about music, anagrams and honesty!
I have written to newspapers to expose the blatant lies they pass off as news in their pages, sometimes with malicious intent, sometimes out of ignorance ....... but often with lack of integrity. A case in point is a simple thing as the ACTUAL DATE on which Scarlet Keelings SECOND autopsy was done ....or since when the FERNANDINA mangoes are supposed to be EXTINCT. There have been no apologies or Corrigendum published to date that I know of ... and no acknowledgement of my emails, bearing my name, phone number and from my personal email ID.
So what are the newspaper Editors really worried about: the TRUTH that they have been shown to be supporting LIES being published as NEWS in their editions?
While I do not subscribe to anonymity, I cannot but salute Penpricks on their exposure!!
Mog asundi.
Miguel
(miguelbraganza@yahoo.co.in)
--
Can someone post this on goajourno also.
The point is what are the privacy laws in India. Today, ISPs routinely give IP addresses of people when police ask for them. I am not sure even if police follow any rules in what IP addresses to ask. Perhaps, an FIR is good enough.
Although I agree with Miguel about the good work of exposing media done by penpricks, the point is whether he has been violating any laws or not.
regards,
Samir

Editors of most goan dailies are whores. Sorry this could be an insult to the whores.

Dear PP,
I have been away from Goa for quite some time now, however I used to browse through the online editions of TNT & OH just to keep myself in touch with my home. I used to believe that these are responsible dailies until recently, when I came across your name on the Tehelka site. It shocked me to the bone to read the way these dailies have compromised their ethics. Add to that the vernacular language newspapers and what we have a sorry state where the majority of them feed us wrong information.
We had never experienced communal tensions in the state. Isolated incidents used to take place but these had more to do with personal feuds rather than religion. However, in the last few years the word 'communal' was being used at free will and I am convinced that the Goan media did little to find the facts, which left us to believe that Goa has been usurped by extremists. It is time that such mentalities are exposed and we Goans rise to the occasion and set an example to the rest of the nation. Let us start out by weeding out the criminals in the media who yield to political agenda. Keep writing.

Narayan, instead of sitting on the fence, why don't you take a stand and support Mr Sinha.
AShwin (Herald editor) and Derrick (GT editor) both have roles in penpricks, so they are ......

Arun Sinha you committed the cardinal mistake of equating Penpricks and others posting comments on this post with sissies in NT(yes Sissies in NT like Ramnath N Pai Raikar, Abdul Rauf Beig, etc)who will crawl when you merely ask them to bend. Yes Arun you are really herding a bunch of Sissies in NT. Else you would have had the guts to sportingly face flak on this post.
Now, face the music. The SHOW has just begun.

Another idea for a story -
Draft a news item on the official stationery of Srinivas Dempo that S D is nominated for the Padmashri/ Nobel Prize, and send it by a messenger from Dempo Towers to Navhind Times office (I expect you have the knowledge of these channels)
Will Arun Sinha run the story?

Hi Pen pricks

Great stuff. keep it going. Arun Sinha is now suddenly exposed in a 'fair and equal' medium. The blogosphere!!!!!

Mr Sinha, the internet is a great leveller. There is no place for wicked minds like you surrounded by a few faithful hounds. They are your only defence. They are your only survival kit. Instead of feeling threatened and now threatening others, you need to come clean. The people of Goa are watching your every move. The poeple of Goa will hold YOU accountable.

I don;t quite understand you guys. Why are you wasting your time with such complete losers like Arun Sinha? This is a guy who puts up a hoarding near GMC which says 'Feel the Goans' Forget feeling the Goans he wanted to feel a poor little Bihari maid. But what I say is - such behavior is expected from a Bihari [OK OK I KNOW I'M STEREOTYPING BIHARIS, BUT IN THIS CASE THE CHARGE IS JUSTIFIED] But what about your true blue Goenkars - like the Dempos - who protect such sickos as Sinha and V.R.Naik, Principal of Dempo college who has been indicted for sexual harassment, but coolly earns more than 45K net sitting at home, paid from the Goan public's money,
thanks to the generosity of Baba Dempo? Don't you think it is a better idea to go after the bhatkars rather than his minions?
Once this is done his loyal arse lickers will fade away without much fuss.

email response from Margaret Mascarenhas

If you'd stop "pricking" around and drop the anonymous cloak and dagger act, you'd have slightly more credibility than a fart yourself (selves). I think you're getting carried away when you say, "The media here cannot stand scrutiny. If they know who it is, that's picking these holes, they'd blast a bazooka through our bellies." Please. Get over yourself (selves). Miguel Braganca, Roland Martins and others have been blasting away at corrupt or simply bad journalistic practices under their real names for ages and still have their colons intact.
Despite their most recent display of stunning stupidity mixed with prize-winning sloth (nice gig, Nazigate, btw), if this "mafia media" you're so terrified of did manage to get off its fanny and figure out who you are (not so difficult), no one would even know you were dead, genius (es), much less eulogize your clever but less-than-world-changing exposés.
It is pretty funny though, that Arun Sinha called a meeting of editors at the Marriot to form a battle plan to fight the pen pansies.

Interesting post from M'am Mascarenhas....Makes perfect sense on paper. Unfortunately it's a whole load of bullshit in the context of journalsim's ground reality in Goa.

Miguel, Cecil and Roland Martins don't do journalism for bread and butter. Their bread and butter is earned elsewhere. So even if 'they' blast a bazooka through the trio's bellies, their colons and rectums too, will stay fine!

If these guys running penpricks are working at mainstream newspapers, then surely, "ANONYMOUS" is the cloak to wear, unless they have palatial portuguese homes, coconut groves and a few landed properties amassed by beber-comer ancestors that socialised and played to the tunes of our former rulers!
Cheers.

Interesting post from Madam Mascarenhas. Absolute logic on paper but a whole load of horse-shit in the context of Goan journalism's ground realities.
She should know that Miguel and Roland Martins do not depend on journalism for their bread and butter. So even if a bazooka actually blasts through their bellies, not just their colons but their rectums too will remain intact. Not a scratch.
So if the guys behind penpricks are journalists earning their bread out of mainstream newspapers in Goa, then my advise is "Anonymity" is the cloak to wear and never ever to be taken off.

Penpricks are you sleeping???
A lot of things are happening on the Goan journo circuit. Here is something for you to probably comment on in your next post.
It's yet another slap in TOI's Raju Na(la)yak's face. Preetu Nair has quit TOI and is expected to join Indian Express as its bureau chief in Goa very shortly.
Journalistic grapevine has it that she took her GURU Sujay Gupta's help to switch over to the Express group.
Well done Preetu, Raju Na(la)yak deserves it. Now, the Na(la)yak is bitching about Preetu to some journos about her performance in TOI. Hello Na(la)yak, is it befitting your much acclaimed(sic) "SARASWAT CULTURE" to bitch about a lady?
What a pity, the Na(la)yak now wants to command respect despite not being able to pen copies in English.
There is more on the rumour plate in TOI. It is learnt that the Na(la)yak also had a tiff with their legal corespondent(an advocate working on a part time basis with TOI on the legal beat). But this advocate proved too hot for the Na(la)yak who threatened the Na(la)yak with resignation and approached Rajib Borah with this problem. It seems Rajibbabu has now asked the advocate to directly report to him thereby effectively bypassing the Na(la)yak. Shame Shame Raju Na(la)yak.
It seems Ahva D'Souzaaaaaaa.....is also facing problems and is currently continuing with TOI due to TINA factor.
Also, what a pity to see that amiable gentleman Paul Fernandes cover briefings on the entertainment beat, a privilege reserved for Goa Times.
There's more in TOI. An exhausted Gauri Malkarnekar covering education beat took leave to escape TOI's daily grind.
Penpricks, surely you are not oblivious to all these happenings in TOI. People subscribing to this blog's principles have high expectations from you. Please do not let us down.
Miguel(MOG ASUNDI) Braganza, this post and your fans reading it baldy need you. Please write something, where are you FRIEND??

Hi, like most of the journos away from goa, I came to know about you following the Nazi war criminal prank. Since then i am a regular reader of penpricks. I have gone through almost the entire blog. The quality of your work is fascinating, to say the least. Strikingly, before you came into being we journos in other parts of the country especially in the bigger cities hardly knew anything anyone of goan/Panaji media. I have never come across such a rich media blog, so far. Wish you continue your good work for years to come.

Why Preetu Nair left TOI. Can penpricks find out please? Rumours are that she was stressed and wanted to work hassle-free and without anybody's botheration.

Preetu Nair like a true Keralite put our Goemkars like Alistair Miranda, Andrew Perreira and Ahwa De Souza in deep soup. Hope they survive there since Kerala God's own country girl screwed their happiness.

Rajan Narayan has now begun to define 'relatively Good bureaucrats' and 'Bad bureaucrats' in the last 3 issues of Goan Observer.

Rajan...here are two questions for you....

1.a) Do you know the names of all Goa Civil Service Officers?

1.b) Let's make it simpler...Do you even know the names of officers earning Rs 20,000 and above.

BTW, They are all listed on the website egov.goa.nic.in/rtipublic

Rajan, all the officers you mention to be 'victimised' hold/held 'wet/plum' postings (that's lucrative for the uninitiated). Many hold/held multiple 'Additional Charges', while, there were/are some holding some undefined posting known as 'Awaiting Posting' also known as 'report to Secretariat for further posting'.

('Awaiting Posting' = You and me paying someone to sit on his hands. It is also a shrewd move so that the officer in question has nothing to write in the all important Confidential Report, thereby falling down in seniority)

Penpricks, this is the latest on TOI BEAT
Preetu Nair has followed in her GURU (Sujay Gupta's) footsteps into blackmailing TOI to hike her salary. She has resumed with TOI after negotiating a hefty hike in her salary.
And now another TOI journo Gauree Malkarnekar is following in Preetu's footsteps by opening channels with NT.
At the other end, the "Kaamchor" Andrew Pereira is trying to rope in Suraj(Chhotu) Nandrekar of Herald for TOI to show his CLOUT(sic) in journalism.
It's all happening at TOI while Penpricks remains in deep slumber.
So jao Penpricks......jaago mat.

I was amused at the comment of Ma’am M.M. I personally am not however surprised, for what else can one expect from a Ma’am who titles a book SKIN, and names a character Pagan?
But to come to the subject of her whinge, that is, why is penpricks anonymous - tell me Ma’am M.M., if your livelihood was on the line would you shoot your big mouth off to criticize, your publisher say. If so do please give us instances of where you have been so courageous without losing anything.

I do recall however that you showed great courage by going after the SKIN of a promising writer named Tony Martin who had asked for your help, saying that you did not have the time to devote to people who could not pay.

Kindly be grateful that penpricks gives you the low down on the nonsense we have to consume everyday without you having to pay anything for it. Remember that whatever the other faults of penpricks, we cannot fault them on account of being not credible. Just publishing something in your own name does not give you credibility. How many think Thomas Pereira the astrologer who publishes ads claiming he can predict the future, which he does in his own name, is credible? OK there are some, but if you don’t think they are idiots, you too must be one of those idiots. No, don’t worry about penpricks' credibility, for the moment they do anything that makes them not credible, they will be torn apart limb by limb, and I will be the first to do so.

Watch SandeshBHAI's career graph for his proposed foray into the CNN-IBN Mutt. He coaxed Shyamsunder Naik into starting 'Dhirio' only to ditch him and join Prudent. This is SandeshBHAI's training ground for his ultimate entry into CNN-IBN.
BTW, SandeshBHAI already has his C.... Pramod Acharya in CNN-IBN for him to use it and when desired.

Dear Andrew/Gauri

Don’t be disheartened at your names being dragged into this muck. You are young, and when we the older generation are gone, will be leading journalism in tomorrow’s world.
I hope you do not take after some of us. Don’t be corrupt, and sell yourself to the backside of a politician.
Shame on us older people, who instead of setting an example and being shining lights to our young colleagues; to develop them into fine men and women for tomorrow’s Goa, we instead teach them to be crabs and pull the other down.
I feel ashamed to be part of a generation, who have sold ourselves to politicians,
greed and vice, and some who get their sadistic satisfaction targeting colleagues who are younger to them by more than a decade.
Penpricks, I think you better start editing this blog. First, you drag Arti Das and now these two in our dirty, bitching world.
Let them remember our generation with respect, and not that we taught them to stoop so low like this. Friends, like a good potter, let us mould them as the future is in their hands.
