WHY A SANJAY DHAVALIKAR IS SOMETIMES AS SICK AND DANGEROUS AS RAJ THACKERAY

Tell you what…
We are in an editor-spanking mood right now.
Pick the guy up by his collar, place him on our lap and give this guy a right good spanking.
Its this Gomantak editorial which has really riled us up. These are the kind of editorials, which appear the day after the editor has had breakfast/dinner with the chief minister or home minister (depending on where the crisis lies). When the CM/HM pats the editor for a great editorial a couple of days ago and then they bring the editor up to date on the amazing things they are doing to keep the state in well being.
A lot of times, we've admitted that there are a few in our flock who're dumb (we'd find a place for one of us here too perhaps) but if Sanjay Dhavalikar has written this editorial, then he has done a great disservice to journalism. If he has merely cleared it, then he should ask RSS' main masseur Satish Dhond for a good head massage…
Sanjay’s senses appear to have addled.
The editorial in question (click on the image and it'll swell into a readable size) appeared some days ago following the alleged rape of a foreigner in Goa in the beginning of the year. We have a problem with the very premise, which the editorial starts off from.
It’s titled ‘IT’S THE TOURISTS WHO ARE AT FAULT’.
Sanjay takes a Talibanesque stance in his editorial when he claims, that the main reason why foreign women tourists are sexually assaulted in Goa is because of the clothes they wear and their ‘behaviour’. He then continues justify his claim, by mouthing the same bullshit, which the Goan State throws to the media. That all this hue and cry about Goa being unsafe to foreigners is only intended to defame Goa and should be condemned.
Then in an even more appalling statement further on, Sanjay goes on to say that the behaviour of foreign women tourists at rave parties is no less than an invitation to rape them.
Sanjay, are you in your senses? Do you realise what you are writing here? You are absolving the State of its most important responsibility? Foreigners attend these rave parties because they are organised in this part of the country. Why does the State not put an end to them?
What kind of vernacular morals are you preaching?
Sanjay, say tomorrow, are you going to define the length of the skirt, worn by any of your female staffers to work, for fear of pumping up the sexual urges of a rustic and a thoroughly decent chap like Ganesh Javdekar? If a sleeveless top sexually incites your assistant editor Suhas Belekar into doing something untoward, who would you banish from Gomantak Bhavan? Suhas or the girl in the sleeveless shirt? If we follow the premise you have laid out, surely its the latter right?
Pluck off your right wing shirt Sanjay? Its high time now. You've worn it long enough. Its torn and your arm pits are showing. And believe me, that's not a turn on. And...
Get real Sanjay, get real…

Well said!

Does Sanjay know what happened during partition to fully clad Muslim/Hindu women? Or even more recently to nuns, muslim women and the adivasi woman a few months ago?

Sanjay... talk to prisoners, rapes happen in both male and female prisons.

A few Indian soldiers would pinch the buttocks of Goan women at liberation. It's not talked about. Sanjay why don't you ask some senior women folk, who lived through those days.

I think the challenge posed by the entry of Times of India to Goa’s especially English newspapers is taking the toll on the objectivity. In the race to stay afloat, newspapers are resorting to cheap gimmicks and sensationalisation.
It is a good sign that all the English papers are desperately trying to increase the local content. But in the bargain they are losing objectivity. Stories not worth carrying on inside pages are displayed prominently on page one. Now every story is a page 1 material.
But today’s edition of Herald was the height. There are these two masterpieces titled ‘Zuari bridge is cracking’ and ‘Two fall prey to antibiotic at GMC’.
The sensational title ‘Zuari bridge is cracking’ can send shock waves through out Goa as a large population of Goa uses this bridge regularly. Ironically, the whole story is based on the account of few fishermen. Since when fishermen have become experts in bridge technology? Even the reporter who filed the story did not bother to check it out himself. There is just one line to support the heading that too from fishermen. In the whole story reporter is trying to contradict his own story by quoting the government official who denied any danger to the bridge.
The least Herald could have done was to take expert opinion from any chartered engineer having knowledge of bridge construction to arrive to some conclusion.
The second story is about two deaths which occurred in GMC after administrating one antibiotic. But not only the report failed to conclude that the deaths were due to the same antibiotic but contradicted its own report by stating that the drug was found to be normal by FDA after laboratory testing. Here again, if Herald has any doubts about the competency of FDA, they could have very well got it tested from any other competent laboratory instead of jumping to the conclusion.
I think this is just a beginning and we should be prepared to see many such gems in Goa’s journalism as the rat race has just began amongst Goa’s newspapers.

Gomantak and Tarun Bharat can be expected to crank up such crap as the Bennett, Coleman and Company Ltd cranks up its marketing machine.

The group has already commissioned its printing press courtesy Dhond who has split from the Tarun Bharat family. Now, Dhond played a major role in making Tarun Bharat a leading paper of Goa.

After breaking away, he wants to take revenge by bringing in Maharashtra Times to Goa.

Raju Nayak will be the editor of Maharashtra Times. His posting at ToI is mainly a training ground. His friends like Sushant Kunkolienkar and others from Gomantak and Tarun Bharat will also join the party.

The fun is just beginning.

Read todays 5 February 2008 editorial by Derrick Almeida of Gomantak Times he goes in for character assasination of the mother of the British teeneger who was kllled last week and states that it is all a media hype which is being created.

Why is Penpricks silent about his editorial just because he writes in English and allows Rico and Mayabhushan to contribute in Gomantak Times

Derrick Almeida's editorial Mystery or farce? GOMANTAK TIMES, March 5, 2008 is the best editorial which gives a incisive account of the way media hype is created. The best thing is that Gomantak Times never did any exclusive investigation but it was the editor even though not being in field was able to gather so much information sitting in his office.

Look at the way Derrick Almeida has changed the paper as soon as he took over. One needs to look at the quality of stories which Gomantak Times is doing now. GT is definately going places.

Saffron baiters, you Penpricks. What's your problem. Assuming Sanjay is a saffronite(nothing wrong with that, folks - definitely better than being a A**E licking pseudo-secularite), how does it colour his edit? Wake up guys, the Congress led coalition is in power.

Gomantak & TB Editorial and its Reporters are going Haywire n desperate to get the declining Attention of their minimising readers in the state of goa. with the entry of TOI (English) n LOKMAT (marathi)in next 2-3 months, they are desperately taking evasive actions (pulling up their socks). The vernacular lang. papers like Goa Doot, Navprabha, Pudhari are breathing their last breath. So called STRONG papers like TB n Gomantak are busy now taking Evasive n futile steps to stop their staff from running n taking the lip licking OFFERS from LOKMAT.
Why Penpricks not taking any note of this change? IS the blog only for English Journalist n its Readers only. or is there lack of "Inside Source'' From the Vernacular papers.come to think of that, why Electronic Media in Goa is sparred by you.The "Sudden Exit or rather death of GOA NEWs channel " and leaving their Local Employees is one Issue you should take openly.
